MidEast:JustPeace turned 5 years old this March

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

Thank you for your support over these years. In the past five years we have:

  • MEJP has done quite a lot to educate the Traverse area public about the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land and US foreign policy in the Middle East.
  • MEJP has established this JustPeace listserve and hosts a MidEast:JustPeace Blog.
  • MEJP has also surely helped spur interest in showing progressive films in the area.
  • The MEJP Steering Committee continues to discuss the future course of MidEast:JustPeace initiatives in the area.
  • Give us your ideas on what you would like to see from MEJP at mkrom@centurytel.net.
  • Stay tuned for some exciting events…………

MEJP has also been a supporting member of US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation.  While the occupation has had the greatest impact upon Palestinians, the occupation also takes its toll on Israelis and also on the US public that funds Israel to the tune of $23,240 per Israeli.  To this end, please review a letter to members of Congress and the President calling for an end to US support for Israel’s military occupations. The US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation is planning to deliver 100,000 of these messages to Congress by June 10, 2007 to protest the 40th year since the 1967 Israeli illegal occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem.  Join MidEast:JustPeace in reaching this goal. Anti-War Presence at Camp & Levin Offices

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

1.jpgAs one of the local peace activities during the 4th commemoration of the Iraq War’s beginning, local activists visited Senator Levin’s and Representative Camp’s respective offices, which are both located on Front Street in Traverse City.

Participants stood outside with informational flyers and signs as a smaller delegation visited the offices. Senator Levin’s aid spoke with the group about communication that is underway between the group and the Senator; no one was in Congressman Camp’s office. Activists had earlier delivered letters to both offices. Those can be read here: Letter to Camp, and Letter to Levin.

FROM TRUE MAJORITY

This was supposed to be the week the Senate got real about winding down the Iraq war. They were *supposed* to vote on taking back the war authorization which allowed this whole thing to get started back in 2002. Instead, they’re delaying. Again. So we’re bringing back our “Faces of War” memorials to remind the Senate what the true cost of this war is — the lives of American men and women.

After 47 Senators blocked the last anti-escalation vote, thousands of TrueMajority members flooded them with over 40,000 printed memorials of fallen soldiers. Now the entire Senate has another chance to take a stand, so we’re going to remind them all week long to do the right thing this time.

Click here to download and print a photo memorial and send it to your Senators’ district offices today.

On the Media (listen online) took a short look at the claims and brought in Sociologist Jerry Lembcke, of “The Spitting Myth” fame to help better understand the broader social perspective of such claims.

1-30 ~ Letter to the Editor

January 30th, 2007 by glbc

Impeachment cheaper?
I support Sen. Levin and other Senate and congressional representatives’ multi-faceted efforts to derail the Bush/Cheney escalation of the war on Iraq and to demand congressional approval before mounting any attack against Iran or Syria.

Although the executive branch dismisses overwhelming public disapproval of the war and ignores military advisors’ skepticism over a surge in forces, its anticipated discounting of the upcoming bipartisan vote of no-confidence for the latest war plans should be the last strike.

At that point I urge our representatives to cut all funding for the war, except those necessary to accomplish a six-month withdrawal of U.S. forces and to cover the Veterans Administration Health Care system for all military veterans.

We cannot recoup the $344 billion spent on this disaster since 2001, but we surely can put the anticipated Iraq war price tag of $8.4 billion a month for this year to much better use. How much would impeachment cost?

This piece first appeared in the Record Eagle on January 30, 2007.

Simply raising the issue in hundreds of communities and Congressional districts would have a healthy effect, and would be a sign that democracy, despite all attempts to destroy it in this era of war, is still alive.” Howard Zinn in Impeachment by the People
